Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, is a multi-layer floor: a rigid core, a printed wood-grain image, a textured wear layer, and a protective top coat. The core makes it dimensionally stable over concrete and in basements. The image and texture are good enough that most people can’t tell it’s not wood without taking their shoes off.
LVP’s edge is water. The waterproof core is what lets it go in kitchens, basements, mudrooms, and rentals where solid hardwood fails. Laminate is the related but different option, with a harder top surface for the dry rooms; we cover it on its own page so each gets the room it needs.
